New Admin Wing

Hazendal Wine Estate

2016 – 2019

Clad in all ‘white’, the building was imagined as a modern interpretation of an old cape barn and forms part of a much larger redevelopment of this historical wine estate. The new administration building is set out in line with three historical barn structures of similar scale, and it is this axis of buildings that forms the Werf edge to this historical farm. Intensive consultations with the Western Cape heritage bodies suggested that the new structure should be sensitive to the scale of the historical buildings adjacent to it. The admin wing’s proximity to the old historical homestead added additional complexity and resulted in an understated, simple and elegantly detailed building, which forms a backdrop to the historical homestead instead of overshadowing it.
